Ban junk food ads before 9pm

""Health charity group Sustain has called for a ban of junk food adverts before the 9pm watershed. Not enough is being done, it says, to protect our children from food with high salt and fat content. Perhaps this is sensible, but I think it only fair that a trade-off is made. For every KFC ad taken off air, we get to hear Jon Snow do a swear in the Channel 4 news.

Fresh obsession wastes food

""Celebrity chefs’ fresh obsession (try saying that after a few shandies) is contributing to food waste. A study says shoppers should avoid cooking exotic meals and stick to processed food if they don’t want to add to the ‘mountain’ of discarded grub. Perhaps instead these ‘scientists’ should just be encouraging shoppers to, erm, reuse ingredients, and not let them fester at the back of the fridge. I dunno.

Hundreds of restaurants sign up for SRA rating

""They’ve been called ‘Michelin stars of sustainability’, and by the end of the year another four hundred restaurants will have them. The Sustainable Restaurant Association judges establishments for sustainability across fourteen categories, from locality and seasonality to treatment of staff and customers. Giles Coren factors the SRA rating into his overall score, and soon websites like Top Table will do the same.
