Sedar plate

A typical Sedar plate containing Matza, Maror, Charoset, Karpas, Zeroah, and Beitzah

The sedar plate contains six symbolic foods used during the prayer service. During prayers the head of the household dispenses the foods to the guests at various points in the proceedings as we retell the story of the exodus from Egypt.
The foods are;
-Matza – Commemorates the unleavened bread the Jews ate when they left Egypt in such haste there was no time for the dough to rise. It symbolizes redemption and freedom.
-Maror – Bitter herbs like horseradish or endives, reflecting the harshness of slavery the Jews had to endure in Egypt
-Charoset – Sweet lumpy paste made of nuts, apples, wine and cinnamon. Represents the mortar the slaves used to build houses in ancient Egypt
Karpas – Parsley dipped in saltwater to represent the tears of our forefathers
-Zeroah – A roasted lamb shankbone symbolising the sacrificial lamb from the Temple services in olden times
-Beitzah – A roasted egg which represents the Temple offering and grief over the destruction of the Temple of Jerusalem in 70CE. It is also a symbol of Spring
